Braces and Food

Most people get braces so that they will end up with a beautiful smile, but if you do not properly care for your teeth and your braces over the course of treatment, the results can be the opposite. To ensure that you end up with the best results, we recommend taking care of your teeth and being conscious of the foods that you shouldn’t eat.

How Eating Can Affect Your Braces

Because of all the nooks and crannies that are created when braces are installed, you must be diligent about your dental care. Food can easily become trapped, which can lead to decay without proper brushing and flossing.

It is necessary to brush after every meal. Brush each tooth individually and brush the entire tooth surface. If you have moving appliances, such as a head gear or rubber bands, remove them before brushing. Angle the toothbrush so that it removes food from around the dental appliances and the gumline effectively.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are unable to brush after a meal, rinse several times with warm water to remove as much of the food particles as possible. Flossing is important and should be done at each brushing. Our dentists in Tulsa can recommend a floss that will do the job as well as instruct you on the most effective brushing and flossing techniques.

Foods to Avoid

Gooey candies and treats, gum and hard or difficult to eat foods should be removed from your menu. Foods such as caramels, gum and sticky, hard candies can damage your braces and cause expensive repairs.

Popcorn should also be avoided. The pieces of the hull can get trapped in crevices and be very difficult to remove and sometimes cause irritation. Hard cookies, hard or chewy crusts and whole apples or pears can also damage your braces. Hard fruits like pears and apples can be cut into small bits before eating. Do not chew ice. Your Tulsa dentist at Perfect Smile Tulsa can provide you with a full list of foods that you should stay away from.

If you properly care for your teeth and be careful of what you eat while you have braces, you will be much happier with the final result and also avoid extra time in one of our dentists chairs.
